Outer Core
The second most inner layer of the Earth is the outer core. The outer core is in a liquid state and keeps a temperature ranging from 4,000°C to 6,000°C. Iron, nickel, sulphur and oxygen elements make up the Earth’s outer core (National Geographic Kids, 2015). The outer core is believed to be approximately 1,355 miles thick (Choi, 2014). The movement the liquid metals within the outer core is believed to contribute in creating Earth’s magnetic field (National Geographic, 2015a). The inner and outer cores are the divisions of the central most layer of the Earth – the core – working together in shaping the planet.
